Jul (Christmas) is a special time in Denmark when people who love Danish traditions tend to miss Denmark the most. Here at the Northwest Danish Association we seek to fill that void by bringing Danish Jul to the Pacific Northwest! Join our Danish community for our various holiday events in the months leading up to Christmas:
November 4th: Danish Holiday Bazaar
Eat delicious smørrebrød (authentic Danish open-faced sandwiches) and do your holiday shopping! Our annual Bazaar offers gifts, Christmas items from Denmark, cookies, cake, and much more. Unique Danish Julekurve (Christmas baskets) are raffled off.
November 30th: Danish Christmas Beer Fest
This event is inspired by J-dag, a celebration each November in Denmark for the release of Tuborg’s Julebryg (Christmas beer). Taste various Christmas beers, Danish Christmas treats, play games, and learn about Danish traditions at the Danish Christmas Beer Fest in Seattle.
December 9th: Julestue
Our annual Julestue is a day filled with Danish Christmas traditions. We maketraditional Danish Christmas crafts and decorations, dancing around the Christmas tree, and telling stories about Nisser. This is a great event for children, but all ages always have a great time getting into the spirit of a Danish Christmas together.
December 13th: Tordagsklubben
Julemad (Danish Christmas food) is on the menu for December’s Torsdagsklubben lunch. December’s lunch will be held a week early, on December 13th, and will feature glaseret juleskinke med grønlangkål og brunede kartofler (glazed ham with kale, Danish style glazed potatoes) and risalamande (rice pudding) for dessert!
December 23rd: Lillejuleaften
Lillejuleaften (Little Christmas Eve) in Denmark is celebrated among friends and family with a focus on community. In Seattle our Lillejuleaften event is held at St. John’s Lutheran Church with a Danish Christmas service from a Danish pastor. The cozy evening ends with a social hour and a chance for the Danish community to mingle in the spirit of the holidays.
